Overview: One of the most challenging aspects of teaching is meeting the needs of diverse learners. One way teachers can accomplish this difficult task is through the use of flexible grouping. When implemented correctly, flexible grouping strategies allow the teacher to meet the needs of the struggling learner while at the same time challenge the more advanced learners. This interactive, fun-filled workshop will focus, first on, identifying the characteristics that distinguish effective and ineffective groups, Then, the majority of the time will be spent learning numerous practical flexible grouping strategies that teachers can implement in their own classrooms. Attendees will be active participants in the workshop as the strategies and techniques are taught, modeled and discussed. To close out the workshop, time will be allotted for teachers to develop a plan for how to integrate the strategies into their own classrooms.

Outcome

Objectives: Participants will gain knowledge and skills in:

·        Distinguishing between traditional group work and high functioning cooperative learning groups.

·        Identifying the four fundamental principles of a high performing cooperative learning group.

·        Implementing flexible grouping strategies to incorporate into their teaching.
