Overview: One of the most challenging problems school staff must deal with is motivating the unmotivated student. This issue becomes most prominent during the middle grades and into high school. It is then that the interest for school fades, as schoolwork becomes more demanding and academic struggles are more noticeable. As time continues, some students’ lack of interest in school increases the risk of dropping out. This workshop will provide participants with an overview of risk factors for disaffected depressed students. Identification of the various disorders and a variety of intervention strategies will help school staff learn ways to help these students.

Outcome

Objectives: Participants will gain knowledge and skills in:

1. Identifying students with mood disorders and how they interfere

with classroom functioning.

2. Learning when not to wait and taking a proactive stance.

3. Understanding how to help students overcome social, emotional

and behavioral problems.

4. Recognizing when professional assistance is warranted.

5. Understanding the potential repercussions of depression and

disaffected reactions to school.

6. Incorporating individual and school-wide intervention

programming to promote school success.
