The Enhancement Technology Program was designed to provide a full
academic experience in a non-traditional setting. This program is located on the
Lakehurst Naval Base in Lakehurst, NJ. Learning occurs in a hands-on format consisting
of technology based instructional units called VLA’s (Virtual Learning Activities).
In these activities, students work together in learning teams, creating 3-dimentional
projects which represent their solutions to abstract problems. In this manner, critical
thinking skills are developed as students acquire and process data from such diverse
areas as Geology, Mathematics, Language Arts, Biology, Physics, Political Science,
Sociology and Meteorology to meet their VLA challenge.
The Enhancement Technology Program accepts classified and non-classified students.
Those most typically referred to the program are students with unsuccessful learning
experiences in a traditional setting for a variety of reasons. These may include
excessive absenteeism, social skills deficits, lack of academic credits, or disability.
Prospective students are referred to the program through their guidance counselor
or the Child Study Team. All students undergo an entrance examination and Parent/student
interview. When a determination is made that the program is the appropriate placement,
the student is enrolled on a probationary basis with a final evaluation made prior
to permanent enrollment. This is to ensure that the student’s academic, emotional
and social needs are best served by the placement.
In an effort to provide the most well-rounded educational and social experience
possible, the Enhnacement Technology Program inludes many of the activities offered
in a mainstream academic environment. Such as, student government, prom, off-site
recreational outings, intermural athletic events, school dances, the yearbook committee
and a school newsletter.
